Mathematics Department Philosophy
The Mathematics Department of Wilkes-Barre Area School District has undertaken the process of curricular revision under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools in order to accomplish the following district goals:
1. To upgrade the curricular offerings of the WBASD to prepare students for the future in a complex educational field and workforce.
2. To coordinate instruction among all grade levels.
3. To standardize the curriculum in all secondary schools of the district.
4. To involve teachers in the constructions and implementation of curriculum.
Mathematics at all levels gives the students the opportunity and knowledge to use logical thinking in problem solving. This is a very important overall value to every student.
These are the Values and Attitudes we are trying to instill among our students.
1. Positive attitude towards mathematics
2. Independent and logical thinking
3. Practical Real World applications
4. Self-Confidence
5. Life-long learning in mathematics
Mathematics is a very important tool in today’s competitive and highly technical society. The mathematics professionals strive to teach students to develop the necessary skills and attitudes for success in both post-secondary education and in the workforce.
The fundamental goal of the Mathematics department is to give quality mathematics instruction to all students. To attain this goal, we provide a sequence of mathematics courses at a grade and ability level to meet each individual student’s needs. These courses not only are structured to give each student a degree of success, but also stimulate growth through challenging problem solving concepts.
